Mercury Poisoning? Tell Us Your Story!

The stories keep coming in:

Recently in the news more and more people are coming out about instances of mercury poisoning, generally from a diet high in fish. The seriousness of their symptoms varies, but their stories are similar.

In early 2005, Oceana will kick off an international campaign to protect children, adults and marine life from mercury poisoning. Our two-pronged approach includes public education and mercury contamination reduction. But we need your help!

If you or someone you know has experienced poisoning from mercury, we want to hear your story. Please follow this link and e-mail us your story:

Be sure to include contact information (including email address and phone number) in case we need to contact you for additional information.

And check back: starting later this month, your story may be posted on the Oceana Web site.

Thanks for helping us protect Americans from this dangerous contaminant. If you have questions or feedback, send them to me at mercury@oceana.org!

Sincerely,

Dawn Winalski

What's At Stake:

Adults who consume high levels of mercury can also experience a variety of toxic effects, mostly related to the nervous system and the brain, which control sensory and motor activities. Behavior, memory, and learning processes are affected by mercury contamination. Also, new studies show that the cardiovascular and reproductive systems can be damaged as well.

In other words, a large number of people in our society are ingesting dangerous amounts of a toxic substance every day. And few have any idea they are doing so. Though public recognition of this health hazard has been slow to develop, there are several clear instances of mercury poisoning that have been widely publicized. For example:

  • Dr. Jane Hightower, a medical doctor in San Francisco, noticed that many of her patients were experiencing symptoms related to mercury exposure, including depression, loss of scalp hair, metallic taste, headaches, arthritic pain, irritability, tremors, and numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. In some cases, the symptoms were so severe that the patients were having trouble earning a living or doing well in school. After several tests and dietary studies, the symptoms were linked to diets high in seafood.

Based on our research and the number of stories we have been hearing, it's quite possible many of you have experienced mercury poisoning or have been diagnosed with it. Your stories will help our campaign!
