Once again, here it is, free of charge, direct to the Capitol Switchboard:

                                     1-800-839-5276
Several Congressmen including some from Florida are calling for an investigation of the vote machine fraud in Ohio, Florida, and New Mexico along with other irregularities before voting to approve electors from those states on Wednesday of this week.

They need one Senator to also contest the electors to get the investigation.  Senator Nelson of Florida is the most obvious.   Everyone contact his local and Washington office tomorrow and ask that he insist on the vote machine fraud being investigated before voting to approve the electors.
888-671-4091 Florida residents only.   Others use the Capitol Switchboard # above.

George Bush and the return of Little Black Sambo
     By Jane Stillwater http://jpstillwater.blogspot.com

Remember Goodman, Schwerner and Cheney -- and the Civil Rights Summer of 1964?  How brave we all were back then as we worked hand in hand for a new world of hope and justice and harmony where "colored people" would be allowed to vote.

It's 40 years later and "colored people" are still being systematically deprived of their right to vote -- only this time on such a grand scale that it would cause even Martin Luther King's jaw to drop.

     I marched in Montgomery.

I was at Malcolm X's funeral.

I taught in freedom schools, I picketed, I marched.  And for every white person like me out on the line, there were at least five "Negroes" risking their lives to have the right to vote.

Now, 40 years later, George Bush is doing every single thing he can think of to resurrect Jim Crow, Stephen Fetchet and Little Black Sambo.

In predominantly African-American precincts in Florida and Ohio in November 2004,  absentee ballots were lost, people were intimidated, voting machines were not provided, legitimate voters were "purged" from voting lists, people were instructed to vote on the wrong day, provisional ballots were "lost," votes disappeared and even dead people were allowed to vote as long as they voted for George W. Bush.

I don't know how African-Americans feel about being placed once again at the back of the bus but I know how I feel.  I am totally pissed off!

In 1964, civil rights worker James Cheney was lynched because he tried to help secure Black people's right to vote.  His battered body was found at the bottom of a river in Mississippi in the summer of 1964.

James Cheney died in order to protect EVERY American's right to vote.

Now there is a new Cheney in town -- a ruthless man who wants to turn back the clock to the bad old days of bigotry, racism and Jim Crow.  Dick Cheney should be ashamed for trying to steal the souls of Black folk.

"I have a dream where a man will be judged by the content of his character and not by the color of his skin," said Martin Luther King.  And to the bigoted hateful corrupt men in the White House today who are once again stealing the African-American vote, I have this to say:  We stopped this kind of criminal behavior once and we'll stop it again.

     "We SHALL overcome."

From Jane Stillwater:  It took Bush FOUR DAYS to even comment on the tsunami disaster, the worst natural disaster in history.  Is Bush ignoring this because it happened to Asians?  AND Bush promised $15 billion in relief to Africa for the AIDS tragedy.  How much of that has been delivered?  Zero, zip, nada.  Meanwhile 2,000 people A WEEK die of AIDS in Zimbabwe alone, most of them women and children.  Is Bush ignoring this because it happened to Africans?  35 million Americans live below the poverty line, most of them children.  Is Bush ignoring this because it happened to children?  If you aren't a millionaire, Bush doesn't care about you.  Get over it.

After reading Jesse Jackson's piece at

http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0104-36.htm

I sent the following message to my senators and a similar message to  my representative.
_________________________________________

Please stand up for honesty and integrity in our deeply flawed electoral process by joining Rep. Conyers in objecting to the Ohio electoral vote count.  As I understand it, if any senator lends his voice to this call, there will have to be an investigation.  I hope my senators will be at the vanguard of demanding that this bastion of democracy really is a democracy.

Professionally conducted exit polls simply are not that wrong. Properly conducted poll are not magic, they're science.  It astonishes me that people are more willing to trust unverified and clearly distorted voting results over good science.  When the two don't agree, the scientific evidence deserves to be valued over hackable black box
results.

My own belief is that the main difference between the 2000 and 2004 elections is that the Republican operatives made sure they stole it big enough that the losers would be intimidated into rolling over.  I could be wrong.  But rather than wondering about it, why not find out?

J David Morris

Tuesday, January 4th, 2005

Dear Members of the U.S. Senate,

Welcome back! The 109th session of Congress has just begun. I'm watching you on C-SPAN right now and you all look so snap-happy and clean-faced. It's like the first day of school all over again, isn't it?

I have a favor to ask of you. Something isn't right with the vote from Ohio. Seems a lot of people didn't get to vote. And those who did, thousands of theirs weren't counted.

Does that seem right to you? I'm just asking. Forget about partisan politics for a moment and ask yourself if there is a more basic right, in a democracy, than the right of the people to vote AND have ALL their votes counted.

Now, I know a lot of you wish this little problem of Ohio would just go away. And many of you who wish this are Democrats. You just want to move on (no pun intended!). I can't say I blame you. It's rough to lose two elections in a row when the first one you actually won and the second one you should have won. And it seems this time around, about 3 million more Americans preferred to continue the war in Iraq and give the rich more tax breaks than those who didn't. No sense living in denial about that.

But something isn't right in Ohio and more than a dozen members of the House of Representatives believe it is worth investigating.

So on Thursday at 1:00pm, Rep. John Conyers of Detroit will rise and object to the vote count in Ohio. According to the laws of this land, he will not be allowed to speak unless at least one of you -- one member of the United States Senate --  agrees to let him have the floor.

A very embarrassing moment during the last session of Congress occurred in the first week when none of you would allow the members of Congress who were black to have the floor to object to the Florida vote count. Remember that? You thought no one would ever notice, didn't you? You certainly lucked out that night when the networks decided not to show how you shut down every single member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

No such luck this year. Everyone now knows about that moment of shame. Thank you? You’re welcome.

But this Thursday, at 1:00pm, you will have a chance to redeem yourself.

Congressman Conyers and a dozen other members of Congress have some serious questions about how the Republican secretary of state in Ohio (who was also the state’s co-chair of Bush’s reelection campaign) conducted the election on November 2. The list of possible offenses of how voters were denied access to the polls and how over a hundred thousand of their votes have yet to be counted is more than worthy of your consideration. It may not change the outcome, but you have a supreme responsibility to make sure that EVERY vote is counted. Who amongst you would disagree with that?

If you would like to read more about the specific charges, I ask that you read these two links: “Senators Should Object to Ohio Vote” —by Jesse Jackson and “Ten Preliminary Reasons Why the Bush Vote Does Not Compute, and Why Congress Must Investigate Rather Than Certify the Electoral College”. I am asking everyone on my mailing list to send you a letter joining me in this call to you to do your job and investigate what happened before you certify the vote.

It only takes one member of the House and one member of the Senate to stop the acceptance of the Electoral College vote and force a legitimate debate and investigation. Do you know why this provision is set in stone in our nation’s laws? I mean, why would we allow just two officials in a body of 535 members to throw a wrench into the works? The law exists because nothing is more sacred than the integrity of the ballot box and if there is ANY possibility of fraud or incompetence, then it MUST be addressed. Because if we don't have the vote, what are we left with?

C'mon Senators! Especially you Democrats. Here is your one shining moment of courage. Will you allow the gavel to come down on our black members of Congress once again? Or will you stand up for their right to object?

We will all be watching.

Yours,

Michael Moore

Robert Scheer: Backing Gonzales Is Backing Torture 1/5

ACTFORCHANGE ACTIVISM UPDATE: January 4, 2005

Sign the Declaration Against American Torture

Hearings on the appointment of Alberto Gonzales to attorney general of the United States will begin this Thursday, January 6. Serious questions still remain regarding Gonzales' apparent advocacy of torture as a legitimate practice by American soldiers, government agents and contractors.

ActForChange has teamed up with True Majority, MoveOn, Faithful America, Sojourners and Win Without War to call on Alberto Gonzales, nominee for chief law enforcement officer of the United States, members of the U.S. Senate, and other responsible government officials, to sign a Declaration Against Torture, unequivocally renouncing all forms of torture and abuse as instruments of American policy.

The Attorney General is charged with protecting the civil liberties of every American, and the American public must be assured that the person who holds the job is up to that task.

Click here to read the complete Declaration Against Torture and to take action!
